David Windholz’s work will be on display at Get Coffee in Chamblee through April.
Of this piece, Windholz says this ‘was my attempt at comedy and art combined. I tried to incorporate the funny things we overhear on a flight.’
Jewish Atlanta native David Windholz has reached a milestone: his first art exhibit. The former publisher of Atlanta Golf Magazine and current salesman hopes to break into Atlanta's art scene with an exhibit that will be on display through April at Get Coffee in Chamblee, 5336 Peachtree Road. Below, the Walton High and University of Alabama graduate chats with the Jewish Times about his work and how he arrived at becoming an artist. How long have you been painting? I started painting my junior year in college, about 12 years ago. I took a summer art class for an easy grade, and ended up really loving it. I took two more art classes after that but was already 75 percent finished with my [communications] major so couldn't make the switch to art at that point. If I could do it all over again, I would go to art school. How would you describe your style? It is tough to describe my style as I am self taught for the most part. Abstract is the most broad word to use, but probably works best. What materials do you use? I have experimented with all kinds of mediums over the years, but the past six years I have been working heavily with inks. What size are your pieces? I have created pieces of art that range from 4-by-12 inches up to 6-by-6 feet. I enjoy painting and working on a larger scale, but storage becomes a major issue once you start cranking out lots of work! Where do you find inspiration? I mainly paint to battle boredum and dullness and to create inspiration for myself and others. I usually lose myself when I create and end up having more thoughts about future projects, life and anything else that enters my head. I find quite a bit of inspiration in other artists as well as music. Tell us about the exhibit. I was fortunate enough to hook up with Get Coffee in Chamblee. They gave me a large portion of the front of the shop to display my work. It is a great mom-and-pop coffee cafe, and they have the most amazing baked goods that are shipped in from New York every week. How many and what pieces will be on display? I have about eight framed pieces on display and another 40 pieces that have been mounted and shrink wrapped that are available in a portfolio to thumb threw. Most of these works have been completed over the past year, but a few of them are from a few years back. These are all the ink pieces I have been compiling. What do you hope happens as a result of the exhibit? I'm really hoping that this showing will result in my gaining acceptance into one of the many Atlanta art galleries. If anything it is another step of getting my name out into the Atlanta art scene. If I happen to sell a few pieces as well, that is just an amazing bonus!
